Shifting from a curatorial approach that foregrounds space, objects and people in the production of exhibitions, Professor Suzie Attiwill entertains the implications and potential of thinking in time through curatorial and craft practices.
Join visiting Professor Suzie Attiwill for a lunchtime talk, followed by a discussion with invited guests: designer Sarah Jamieson, curator-designer Kat Bond, and designer and PhD candidate, Caitlin Dubler.
Dr Suzie Attiwill has a practice encompassing exhibition design, curatorial work, and writing. Prior to her academic career at RMIT School of Architecture & Urban Design, she was the inaugural artistic director of Craft Victoria. As Professor of Interior Design, her practice research focuses on questions of interior and interiority in relation to contemporary conditions of living, inhabitation, subjectivity, and pedagogy. Projects are conducted through design with a curatorial inflection involving arrangements (and re-arrangements) of spatial, temporal and material relations to intervene in contemporary conditions. From 2018–21, Suzie was Associate Dean Interior Design; she leads the RMIT Interior Design practice research PhD program offered in Australia, Europe, and Asia.
Dr Sarah Jamieson is director of Catseye Bay; a commercial design practice that foregrounds process and experimentation. Her most recent exhibition designs include the 'Waverley Art Prize' at Bondi Pavillion and 'Photography and the Performative' at the Chau Chak Wing Museum. She completed her practice research PhD at RMIT University in 2020.
Katherine Bond is an Associate Lecturer at UNSW Art & Design, and a practising exhibition and experience designer. With a focus on sculpting transformative, pro-social experiences, her projects are united by an attention to materiality, sequencing, and structuring connections between people and place. Prior to UNSW, and founding her own design studio, Katherine was the design lead at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and responsible for creating inspiring and engaging museum environments for diverse audiences. Her research explores spatial activation, choreographic thinking, and designing opportunities for play and wonder.
Caitlin Dubler is a glass artist and trained silversmith whose practice works across jewellery, performance, and installation. Her practice research focusses on craft processes and experimental kiln-forming techniques, tracing vibrational movement through the fiery heat of the kiln to the gallery space. She is currently a PhD candidate at UNSW Art & Design.
