Current Research Activity

1. Aesthetic Strategies in Neo-Conceptual Art: 1980s-1990s.
Drawing on recent developments in aesthetic theory, including Lacanian psychoanalysis, the project examines aesthetic strategies in Neo-Conceptual art of the 1980s and 1990s that have been overlooked in previous postmodern and anti-aesthetic interpretations. As an intervention in current international debates about the return of aesthetics in contemporary art and theory, the study reconsiders the relationship between aesthetic and ethical issues in conceptualist art of recent decades.

2. 'Design Art': since 1990
A vogue for 'design art' - work that exists at the intersection of art, design and architecture - became a widely recognised visual arts genre during the 1990s. To date, however, this marked tendency has received limited interpretation, evaluation or theoretical analysis. Toni's research project will form the first systematic theoretical and comparative account of such art based on case studies of key contemporary practitioners in this emerging field. Artists who make up the study include: Joe Scanlan, Andrea Zittel, Kathrin Bohm, Liam Gillick, Jorge Pardo, Atelier van Lieshout and Callum Morton.
