Rod Bamford is intrigued by innovative synergies that occur in the process of bringing designed
objects to a global market, especially the impact of new technologies and materials on design and
product development and how these impact on the values attributed to traditional design / hand work
attitudes. The various cultures and economies of scale across which this operates raises complex
ethical and environmental questions.
Current research is focused on investigating and applying convergent data driven processes to
object design, linking traditional visual arts and crafts methods with digital modelling,
photographic and material printing technologies. One aim is to develop design methods which
maximise flexibility of expression at an appropriate sustainable scale. The present state of that
investigation is being explored through a series of limited edition ceramic objects produced as
part of an OZCO (Australia Council) strategic partnership grant.
