Introductory Profile:
A 2006 Australia Council Residency at the British School at Rome, an International Research Centre, will enable Nicole Ellis to investigate ancient techniques of building construction. Because of her interest in imaging the relationship of surface and structure, this research will allow comparisons and interpretations to be made against iconic structures in Australia, India, Egypt and Britain. These residues of ancient fortification systems, Nicole argues, are ultimately metaphors of impermanence and fragility, of high relevance to any global crisis.
