Current Research Activity

Martin Sims has an extensive background in sculpture and installation practices, though in recent years has developed a series of projects using video and sound. Earlier work has drawn heavily upon architectural traditions of monumental building and a distinct sense of physical mass in relation to spatial extent remain central to the ideas Martin currently pursues with temporal media.

Martin's five-year audio project Thin Air brings together real-time sound of iconic silent spaces in global locations. It features sonic minutiae recorded at sites such as the Rothko Chapel, Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camp and the Whispering Gallery in Saint Paul's Cathedral; this work will received its premiere presentation in Cork, European Capital of Culture 2005. Video work in progress uses real-time footage of urban and rural topologies to explore the notion of ground as a site of manifold kinds of inscription and erasure. See the current issue of Artlink magazine, for discussion of his work on the Hay Plain in western NSW.
