Historical and contemporary exerimental practices in art and design; Designed objects as social critique; Experimental design in typography: implications for design.
Graphic/Media Design; Design Honours program; Typography and Publication Design; Propaganda and Advertising Design; Experimental Design.
In the contemporary context design is frequently described as a ubiquitous and primarily economically focussed activity, and evaluated according to market measures. Katherine is researching how experimental art and design practices question design conventions and traditions and provide a form of criticism of the field as currently constituted. The larger context in which Katherine's research is situated is the history of discursive art and design. The aim of her research is to evaluate how experimental design practices contribute to art and design debate in social, cultural and political domains.
