Fang has been in the design professional for 18 years and has extensive industry experience both in
Australia and overseas. Especially, in 1999, Fang established his own multi-disciplinary design
practice in Beijing, designing and managing a diverse variety of projects in urban, architecture,
interior, landscape and object. He substantially built his reputation and widely gained
professional recognition through projects, exhibitions and publications. His book “Building into
Landscape” as a case study reveals his design philosophy behind his practice.
Fang’s research interests are generated from his broad professional practice and benefited
from his cross-cultural experience. His academic passion is in exploring design as a medium- the
relationship between culture, design processing and decision-making. Fang's work focuses on urban
public space design, and its response to the world's social, cultural and environmental
changes. Prior to taking up his position at CoFA, Fang had lectured at the AoAD, Tsinghua
University (Beijing) and Griffith University. He coordinated the senior year courses, taught the
graduate and postgraduate design programs and contributed to design research. In 1986 and 1983,
Fang gained a M.A and B.A from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing,
where he is currently also an adjunct professor.
