Carol Longbottom is interested in looking at ways in which the relationships between design
practice and theory can be explored and the power and significance of historical precedents when
considering solutions to contemporary design problems and ways in which those ideas may be
represented.
Carol's current research project, coming out of a John Yu Fellowship, is entitled
Theorizing Practice: Educating Undergraduate Design Students for Critical Understanding of
Contemporary Design Practice.
This research represents a preliminary engagement with colleagues at the University of Rome
and is designed to initiate research into a case which demonstrates the integration of theory
courses and design studio within a design program. Carol is also investigating the possibility of
modelling teaching design theory as a studio related activity and developing appropriate
methodologies to aid the emerging design professional. Methods will include investigating ways of
developing analytical, perceptual and graphic skills and of understanding concepts and principles
in design by way of analysis and comparison using historical contemporary models.
