COFA lecturer and artist, Allan Giddy, has created a temporary public artwork that links the Sydney
Olympic Site with Beijing during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, titled Sonic Wells.
During the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Sonic Wells will continually broadcast recorded sounds
emanating from the Beijing Subway into the Olympic Park Station, while speakers in Sydney's Station
Square will play sounds coming live from the streets around the Dongsishitiao subway station
located in the heart of Beijing.
Sonic Wells is part of a broader program of cultural
exchange between host cities of the Olympic Games initiated by Sydney Olympic Park.
Allan Giddy was assisted in Beijing by Kim Vernon and in Sydney by Jamil Yamani. The project
is supported by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA), China-Australia Chamber of Commerce and
COFA UNSW.
Allan Giddy lectures at COFA in the School of Art, and is the founding director of EIRA: The
Environmental Research Institute for Art. EIRA works to test environmentally sustainable
installations in collaboration with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA).
