It has recently been argued that contemporary politics has become, in essence, a struggle for
control over representation, and not the oil reserves, which opens a wealth of new opportunities
for the artist with a conscience. One such artist and COFA lecturer, Phillip George, uses the power
of digital manipulation to make precisely this point and he does it in a manner that demands a
great deal of the viewer. There are sites and sights in the works in the upcoming exhibition Images
from the Borderlands of Empire that may mean nothing to the viewer; but it is enough that George
makes us aware of it.
Images from the Borderlands of Empire opens at Depot Gallery II on Tuesday 17 June and runs
till Saturday the 28 June. Join the artist for drinks on Saturday 21 June from 2 to 4 pm.
When: Tuesday 17 June till Saturday 28 June, 2008
