To ensure the safety of exhibits and installations on campus you must always read the exhibit
safety advice and must always follow the safe working procedure for setting up and preparing for
exhibits (see links below).
A risk assessment must be completed if your exhibit is a fire risk, if you are using food
products, if you are using lasers, if you are using chemicals, if you are using biological
materials, if your exhibit has moving or sharp parts, if your exhibit has hot or cold surfaces, if
your exhibit is suspended or if your exhibit may pose some other risk. The use of human and animal blood product and waste products is
not permitted and the use of deceased animals or animal parts is also not permitted.
When conducting a risk assessment it is important to consider the following hazards
-Lifting of heavy items (ie above 20kg)
-Working at heights / Using ladders
-Using power tools
-Using hand tools, blades, nails/pins, screws, laser levels
-Working with hazardous substances (Chemical or Biological)
-Fire Hazards
-Electrical hazards
-Emergency hazards
-Physical hazards :- Sharp objects, falling items e.t.c
The exhibit safety checklist can also be used as a guide to ensure your exhibit will be safe
to the people viewing it.
The risk registers and example risk assessment below can be used as a guide to complete your
risk assessment.
For more information on exhibit safety please refer to the exhibit safety advice provided
below, which details safety precautions that must be in place before the exhibit or installation
takes place. The advice given by this document is not meant to be exhaustive and if you require
further advice or guidance contact the
COFA OHS
coordinator or the
UNSW
OHS Unit.
