OH&S - Committee

The OH&S Committee is constituted under the NSW OH&S Regulations 2001 Chapter 3. The Committee comprises both elected and appointed members from the workplace. Undergraduate and postgraduate student representatives are elected from those bodies. Management may appoint representatives such that the employer representatives do not out number the employee representatives.
 
Meetings and Minutes

The Dean

The Dean has ultimate responsibility for Occupational Health and Safety at COFA. The Dean is assisted in this regard by the Faculty OH&S coordinator, the Faculty Manager and the Occupational Health and Safety Committee (OH&SC).
 
Chairperson

The Chairperson is an executive manager or delegate with authority to act on their behalf in OHS matters.
 
The Faculty OH&S coordinator
The Faculty OH&S Coordinator acts as an advisor to the commitee and may act as Secretary and on occasions, act as Deputy Chairperson when required.
 
Review
The Committee will review all OH&S policies and practices and the consultative arrangements in the workplace. The review will ensure that all safety issues are being addressed and that consultative arrangements are effective.

Committees role and responsibilities

  • To review general measures taken to ensure the health and safety of persons at the workplace.
  • To investigate any matter brought to the employer’s attention which a committee member or employee considers to be unsafe or a risk to health.
  • To assist in the development of recording systems for accidents and hazardous situations.
  • To assist in the development of a safe working environment and safe systems of work.
  • To assist in the formulation of the University’s overall OHS policy and OHS management system.
  • To monitor measures taken to ensure proper use, maintenance and, if necessary, replacement of equipment designed to protect employees from hazardous situations.
  • To make recommendations to the University regarding health and safety matters.
  • Resolve any health and safety problem, if possible. If the committee cannot resolve the problem it refer the issue to the UNSW OHS and Workers Compensation Unit to assist. It can also ask WorkCover Authority of New South Wales to assist.
  • Carry out inspections at the workplace.
  • Obtain information or do other things prescribed in the Regulation
