The International Drawing Research initiative is a consortium created to advance research into and through the discipline of drawing.

The Institute enquires into and promotes the seminal role of drawing within art, design and architecture and – by extension – interdisciplinary visual discourse across any or all of the disciplines of higher education.

The Institute comprises its three founding members: the COFA UNSW, in Sydney, the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and new IDRI members: Lincoln, University, UK, Lu Xun Academy Of Fine Arts, Shenyang, China, Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi, Pakistan and Dong Hua University, Shanghai, China.

The Institute advances drawing research through conferences, colloquiums, exhibitions, publications, studio based workshops, master classes, exchanges of staff and students and collaborative research projects using a diversity of methods and methodologies.

Since its inception in 2000, IDRI has continued to support the act of drawing, to contribute to artistic excellence, to initiate and facilitate creative and genuine research activities through unique links with our international colleagues.

The future of IDRI is to extend collaborative activities with a range of institutions worldwide, furthering the role of drawing in creative practice, exploring aesthetic, philosophical and cultural diversity.
