PhD

The PhD entails a program of independent research, pursued under the guidance of a supervisor. It is a requirement of the award of the PhD that a candidate makes an original contribution to knowledge in a designated field. Entry into this degree requires a good honours degree or equivalent and is determined by the merit of a research proposal. Potential candidates should seek initial advice on the preparation of this proposal from the School Postgraduate Coordinator.

Usually a doctoral thesis takes the form of a written dissertation, the length of which should not exceed 100,000 (average length, 70,000). However, it may comprise a combination of studio and written work. Where the final submission takes the form of an exhibition or other studio component, together with a dissertation,the size of the written component is proportionally reduced. The precise form of a submission, including word length, is determined through consultation between the course authority, the supervisor and the candidate.

The PhD requires a minimum of three years full-time study (six years part-time), during which time candidates participate in School seminar programs and an annual review process, in addition to regular supervisory sessions.

Masters by research 

A masters by research provides candidates with the opportuinty to develop a research proposal and work in consultation with their supervisor to acheive its stated aims.

Most masters by research programs are offered full-time for two years or part-time for four years as a minimum for the award of the degree. The Master of Philosophy is offered one and a half years full time or three years part time.
