COFA ILIRI Elective Field Trips
A strong team of ILIRI artists on staff at COFA teach the
students on the field trips to Fowler's Gap and other locations in the area. Instructors include Dr Idris Murphy, Louise Fowler-Smith and Peter Sharp. Other experts in the field meet with the ILIRI
groups, such as eminent Aboriginal elder and artist Badger Bates, and the director of Fowlers Gap Research Station,
scientist Dr David Croft. Day trips are organised to Mutawintji, Euriowie Gorge, Kinchega National Park. Groups
include both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and often staff from other COFA departments. Artists-in-Residence are also available for discussions.
There is a rich exchange of knowledge on these ventures.
The trip from Sydney to Broken Hill, the nearest town to Fowler's Gap, takes 14
hours by train, or two days by car. The climate in this semi-arid region varies from very hot in
summer to bitterly cold in winter.
