This exhibition of thirteen well-known artists is a first for The Unviersity of New South Wales
College of Fine Arts. The traditional student-teacher relationship has been turned on its head: the
artists in Placemark are COFA faculty members, their work for the exhibition selected and
interpreted by postgraduate students studying Exhibition Management & Curatorial Studies in
COFA's acclaimed Master of Art Administration programme.
Placemark presents a variety of work bound by themes of memory and place. Works have
been selected from the areas of video and photomedia, painting and drawing, textiles, sculpture and
design. The exhibition includes the quirky traffic orchestration of Allan Giddy's Newtown Shuffle,
Debra Phillips' breathtaking images of the vast, mystical plains of Lake George, and Dennis Del
Favero's Pentimento, a haunting video narrative concurrently showing at the Australian Centre for
the Moving Image in Melbourne.
This exhibition not only features a range of works by COFA based Sydney artists, but
provides a unique insight into the working process of next generation's curators. With nothing to
lose and everything to gain, the work of this dynamic group of postgraduates is testament to the
high regard in which COFA's Master of Art Administration is held by the arts industry both in
Australia and abroad.
