This distinguished award was established in 2004 to recognise an excellent contribution to the
field of art, design and education. The inaugural presentation coincided with ARTEXPRESS' 21st
birthday celebrations and the official opening of ARTEXPRESS@COFA2004.
Professor Ian Howard, Dean, College of Fine Arts commented in presenting the award: 'I am
very pleased to present this award to Chris Bates, Head Teacher Visual Arts, Hornsby Girls High
School. Chris has distinguished herself over many years as an outstanding Visual Arts teacher. She
is passionate about the teaching of art and design and dedicated to life and learning in the
classroom. Her understandings of contemporary artistic practices as well as her outstanding
knowledge of art history and art criticism inform day to day teaching, judgement and actions and
underpin a capacity to critically and playfully reinvent to her teaching and students' learning.
Chris is held in the utmost esteem by current and previous students and is attentive to their lives
and careers. Chris has been part of many iterations of the College of Fine Arts since the late
1960s with a Diploma in Art Education at Alexander Mackie Teachers College, a Bachelor of Art
Education and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Gallery Management from City Art Institute and a Masters
of Art Education at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW'.
