COFA Exhibition/Performance Spaces presents WITHOUT REASON, an exhibition of current work by twelve
local artists on the COFA Master of Fine Arts program. The exhibition is curated by a team of
emerging curators studying Exhibition Management & Curatorial Studies on the Master of Art
Administration program.
When curator of the 2004 Biennale of Sydney, Isabel Carlos, announced her theme 'On Reason
& Emotion', based on Antonio Damasio's book "Descartes' Error" (1995), and subsequently spoke
with the Curatorial Studies class, the student curators chose to use her theme as a platform to
investigate how art reveals aspects of those life experiences that seem to have no reason, no
logic, and no explanation. The works included are reflections of the chaotic and senseless events
we either hear about or experience in everyday life - journeys and perceptions that exist without
reason, and yet have a profound impact on our psyche and the way we live our lives.
The COFA Master of Fine Arts students exhibiting in WITHOUT REASON have explored these issues
through various media.
The artists are Abi Alice, Monika Behrens, Tanya Chaitow, Carol Christie, Jessica Geron,
Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, Joanne Handley, Camie Lyons, Juliana ODean, Gary Shinfield, Jeannette
Siebols and Gordon Snow.
