Shumei Kobayashi is one of Japan's foremost textiles practitioners and has spent over 30 years
perfecting the hand dyeing technique known as
Tsutsugaki Yuzen which involves finely detailed, hand
drawn designs precisely rendered on silk, cotton or hand woven hemp – the finished pieces are then
used as wall hangings, wrapping cloths and wearable pieces.
Shumei Kobayashi has received numerous awards and prizes and has exhibited widely in both
Japan and internationally - the Japan Foundation in Sydney has held exhibitions of this work in
1996, 2003 and 2005.
Shumei is committed to maintaining the 400-year-old traditional techniques that he has
mastered by integrating them into contemporary culture through his choices of motifs and their
architectural uses.
'I am interested in creating a work of art which emotionalizes our present life with the very
old dyeing method (tsutsugaki yuzen) of Japan'. Shumei Kobayashi
