1-23 May 2009 Ivan Dougherty Gallery
After the triumph of Papunya Tjupi Art’s fundraising exhibition, New Beginnings, held at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery in
2007, the artists of Papunya, a remote Northern Territory settlement made famous as the birthplace
of the internationally celebrated Western Desert painting movement, were finally able to open their
own community based art centre.
Curated by the centre’s directors, Kasumi Ejiri and Simon Taylor, Building Papunya Tjupi showcases the talent of the artists
who’ve been working at the centre over the last 18 months.
Etchings and relief prints from workshops conducted at Papunya and at the College of Fine
Arts’ Cicada Press will reveal the progress the artists have made in this new medium. Descendants
of the original founders of Papunya painting will present large family canvases and individual
works will highlight how the artists have developed with access to a professional environment.
The proceeds of this exhibition will go towards a further upgrade of Papunya Tjupi Art’s
painting space.
Symposium: In conjunction with the exhibition, UNSW’s
Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics and the Ivan Dougherty Gallery present Art and
Appropriation Post The Apology, 1 - 2 May.
