As Barack Obama settles into the White House, promising change with an earnest “Yes, we can”
attitude, the group exhibition Bushwhacked puts the previous US presidency under the microscope.
Curator Adrian Davies presents unashamedly political works by Australian and international
artists that map the fallout from George W Bush’s two terms as “leader of the free world”.
In Bushwhacked, seven artists and collectives mine Dubya’s legacy for inspiration, from his
tragicomic slips of the tongue to his deadly serious actions in the euphemistic War on Terror and
the seemingly endless actual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Notorious American feminist activists, the Guerrilla Girls, take a cheeky look at the rights
of women in an era characterized by paranoia and the erosion of civil liberties.
In gritty black and white, Australian photojournalist Stephen Dupont documents soldiers
behaving badly in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Bushwhacked also includes thought provoking pieces by Abdullah Syed, an Australian
installation artist and printmaker born in Pakistan, Chris Morris, UK satirist, American poster
artist Robbie Conal, Australian time-based artist David Mackenzie and fellow Aussie, Wax Audio, a
mash-up DJ.
