Artist and past COFA Dean Ken Reinhard AM has been a highly distinctive and leading Australian exponent of Pop Art since 1964. For more than four decades, his constructions and mixed media works have turned on crisply-decisive, fastidiously positioned, vibrantly coloured and immaculately fabricated forms.
In the mid 1980s, Reinhard translated these formal characteristics into objects that can function as pieces of furniture, but which also stand as dramatic pieces of sculpture. In some respects, these pieces by Reinhard parallelled the work of the MEMPHIS collective of designers, whose post-modernist style furniture/sculpture dominated the 1980s design scene. Reinhard’s pieces have a greater Bauhaus-like rigour than the more playful Memphis works, and they also retain his interest in imagery derived from popular culture. Nevertheless both Reinhard and Memphis joined art, design and architectonics in a way that was utterly fresh and adventurous.
