COFA PhD candidate Francesca Mataraga is holding an exhibition at Factory 49 titled The Abstrakt Landscape. The Abstrakt Landscape presents a suite of work linking
abstraction and landscape. Cubic forms in different materials create a type of vista reminiscent of
cityscape. A tabletop installation is mirrored by wall drawings, using an architectural
format that affirms the connection between the abstract composition and its allusions to
architecture and landscape.
This piece explores the idea of being immersed or surrounded by abstraction in a
three-dimensional way, as one would in an actual landscape. Taking inspiration from the artist's
previous work, in particular the Empty Space Project (2006), The Abstrakt Landscape extends ideas of interpreting
classical abstract painting into sculptural forms.
The Abstrakt Landscape is part of Abstract Actualities,
the 2008 program of works presented at Factory 49. Factory 49 is an artist run Showroom that
presents contemporary abstraction (non-objective) art in showcased solo shows.
Francesca is a Sydney based artist working in conceptual painting, sculpture and
installation; her work has been exhibited in various venues including Peloton, s.n.o.,
The Blake Prize and the Woollahra Small
Sculpture Prize.
