Marion Gelbart has always been intrigued by the form and structure of fruit bag netting - an empty bag is a delicate beautiful, dynamic form. Last year she did a textiles project in which the brief was to reinvent the traditional notions of lace using recycled materials. With this brief in mind, upon seeing a fruit bag laying on the kitchen bench, she immediately made a connection between the netting and Belgian Point de Gauze lace. Gelbart set about making her own contemporary lace and discovered the fruit bag as a canvas and a perfect medium to express themes of delicateness and fragility while revitalising a discarded material to create something beautiful and contemporary.
