Sally Clarke The Transplanted Bush
This exhibition is the culmination of Clarke’s four-year research undertaken
in the Blue Mountains and offers a fresh perspective on the subject of Australian landscape
painting and the role it has played in the shaping the Australian national identity. The bush, an
anti-city space, has become a sort of brand which is often regarded as the real Australia. However,
with her ways of seeing conditioned by the urban environment, Clarke never felt that the bush as a
place where she belongs.
In this body of work, she does not really intend to redefine the Australian identity, but
rather, to disrupt, question, and refurbish the brand.
