Arts Project Australia was founded in Melbourne in 1974 with the express purpose of exhibiting
artwork in a manner that accords artists with an intellectual disability the same dignity and
respect as other artists. This year marks ten years since Stuart Purves, Director of Australian
Galleries, was struck by the bold, refreshing and slightly naive works by artists attached to APA
and began a unique collection, that now consists of 180 works. Purves has been a prominent and
respected commercial gallery owner for four decades having joined the family founded Australian
Galleries in 1966. This exhibition highlights a selection of works by 43 artists from this
remarkable collection. They show the richness of the creative expression of these artists who
explore their practice with individual integrity.
