After the triumph of Papunya Tjupi Art's inaugural fundraising exhibition New Beginnings at Ivan Dougerty Gallery in September-October 2007, the artists of Papunya were finally able to open their own community based art centre. A year and a half later, Building Papunya Tjupi will showcase the talent of the artists now working enthusiastically at the centre, with the proceeds of the exhibition going towards a further upgrade of the painting space. Descendants of the original founders of Papunya painting will contribute large family canvases; new prints from workshops conducted at Papunya and Cicada Press will reveal the progress of the Papunya artists in this new medium; and individual work will show how the artists have blossomed in a caring and professional environment.
