This exhibition reconstructs Ralph Balson’s 1941 exhibition at Anthony Hordern Gallery – the first
one-person exhibition of abstract painting in Australia. Recognised as a landmark in the history of
Australian art, Balson’s exhibition has greatly influenced subsequent generations of Australian
artists. Exhibition curators Nicholas Chambers (Curator of Contemporary International Art,
Queensland Art Gallery) and Michael Whitworth (art collector, benefactor and board member for the
Biennale of Sydney) have spent 5 years researching the exhibition in order to assemble the
surviving works and provide audiences with a unique opportunity to view the exhibition anew. An
illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
