Gallery History & Vision
3 foot square is an alternative exhibition space, located at the main entrance to COFA on Greens road, in the form of a window gallery, illuminated at night presenting art to the public 24/7.
3 foot square is also COFA’s smallest and most accessible exhibition space that continues Sydney’s tradition of “hole-in-the-wall” galleries. The window gallery was built in 2002 as an initiative of Dr Alan Krell and his first year Bachelor of Art Theory students to provide an opportunity for COFA students and staff to showcase their work and for the general public to experience contemporary art without having to step inside a traditional gallery space.
The inaugural 3 foot square exhibition featured four artists; Marr Grounds, Tony Coleing, Shayne Higson and Bonita Ely, all original participants and curators of the pioneering and original “hole in the wall” exhibition space: AVAGO in Macdonald St, Paddington, which was then the smallest gallery in the Southern Hemisphere.
Over twenty years later, in November 2002, 3 foot square was created and launched at COFA to continue this unique Sydney tradition.
Proposing an exhibition
If you wish to exhibit in the three foot square please contact us with details.
You should provide the following information
- A short description of the work, including an artist’s statement (max. 200 words).
- Any ‘unusual’ requirements for the work’s successful installation.
- The earliest date on which the work may be installed must be indicated.
Final confirmation is in the hands of the curator who will contact the applicant asap.
