Winter in Vermont, 2005 compiles work from a residency
that Stephen Copland undertook at the Vermont Studio Center in the United States.
In January 2005 Australian artists Meredith Brice and Stephen Copland were resident artists
at the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont USA. The center is the largest residency program in
America accomodating 60 artists per month from around the world.
The large studio set up one of the most rewarding work experiences that the artist can
remember. Copland made the decision to work only on paper and from memory with a diary of images
every day. A minimum of graphic material was purchased …. black and white paint, charcoal and
coloured oil crayons while the brown paper was mill paper used to protect the floor.

Winter of Vermont will be shown at John Miller
Galleries Newcastle in 2008. This exhibition explores the beauty of North America as well as the
dangers. Fellow resident and American writer, historian Kevin Dann wrote “Physical winter Vermont’s
native Wonbanakiak people who weathered its challenges for thousands of winters, called it 'the
killing time' has brought with icy intensity the judas kiss of betrayal that all that comforting
whiteness and silence hides.”
