The study of art places each artist, as a unique individual, at the centre of the creative process.  When you choose to study fine arts at COFA you are provided with a challenging and supportive environment in which to explore and research the breadth of many genres and medias. Under the guidance and mentoring of a committed staff of nationally and internationally recognised artist-educators and researchers, each student’s talents are fostered.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is a three-year full-time degree that provides a foundation for people who would like to become practicing artists in the visual arts or related fields.

The main BFA discipline areas in which students can major are: Painting; Drawing; Printmaking; Sculpture, Performance and Installation; Photomedia; Time Based Art; Ceramics; Jewellery and Textiles.  At COFA, interdisciplinary practice is encouraged and research excellence promoted.

Students can also apply for the Bachelor Fine Arts/Bachelor of Arts combined program.

Program Aims

The Bachelor of Fine Arts aims to provide students with:
- The opportunity to explore a range of disciplines and approaches within the visual arts, with reference to historical and contemporary practices;
- The ability to think critically and reflectively;
- The ability to work in a focused or interdisciplinary manner with traditional and/or emergent technologies;
- A rich and supportive learning environment wherein full intellectual and creative potential can be met.

Career Opportunities

BFA graduates generally work as practicing artists in their field(s) of expertise, such as professional photographers, textile artists, sculptors, painters, printmakers, ceramicists, video/web artists, jewellers, and filmmakers.  As the BFA equips students with many skills and insights, graduates can also find employment across arts industries including in: Arts Education; Arts Administration; Advertisement; Arts Writing; Curating; Exhibition Design; Theatre, Film and/or Television Production; Commercial Photography; Multimedia Industry Work (with Sound and Web Technologies); Urban Planning to Produce Site-Specific Artwork for Interior and/or Public Locations.
