Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons)

Course Code: 4814

The study of art places each practitioner at the center of the creative process. When you choose to study Fine Arts at COFA you are provided with a challenging and supportive environment in which to explore and research the breadth of many genres and medias. Under the guidance and mentoring of a dedicated staff of nationally and internationally recognised artist educators and researchers, each student’s talents will be fostered.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) is four-year full-time degree that incorporates an Honours year.

Creative Degrees = Creative Careers

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) degree exposes students to a broad range of contemporary fine arts. Graduates are able to become independent artists or work in the broader creative arena.

Fine Arts graduates may become professional artists, but they are also well equipped to join the workforce. By doing an Honours year they demonstrate creativity, self-motivation and a professional level of research ability. And most importantly, by undertaking a creative work placement, students gain valuable industry experience before they even graduate.

Student Choice

Students are able to tailor their own degrees by studying exactly what they are most passionate about. BFA-Hons students can decide to become specialists in just one area, or they can develop a multidisciplinary skill-base.

Throughout their study, students are able to fine-tune their skills and areas of expertise by undertaking electives in any area they wish. Students also take courses that put their practice in a theoretical and historical context.

Degree Structure

  • Stage 1: In their first year, all COFA Studio Degree students undertake a foundation year made up of Gateway courses. Fine Arts, Media Arts and Design and students work alongside each other, encouraging multidisciplinary engagement and allowing students to gain skills and ways of thinking that are applicable to a wide range of studio practices.
BFA-Hons students also undertake two Fine Arts focused Gateway courses.
  • Stage 2 and 3: In their second year of study, BFA-Hons students choose 1 or 2 two of the following Fine Arts studios: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture-Installation-Performance, Cross-Media Arts, and Textiles. Or they may choose one Fine Arts studio and another studio from Media Arts or Design.
  • Stage 4: The fourth year of the BFA-Hons is an Honours year. Students undertake a major self-directed project. They also participate in a Creative Work Integrated Learning program that prepares them to enter the job market though professional experiences in the arts industry. Progression to fourth year is subject to academic performance over the first three years of study.
