Bachelor of Art Education (BArtEd)

Course Code: 4801

Administrator: School of Art History and Art Education

The Bachelor of Art Education at COFA prepares students to take on the professional role of the visual arts educator in the rapidly evolving world. Art Education offers students a unique insight into the role that creative visual ideas play in the development of society.
The Bachelor of Art Education focuses on creative education and is perfectly placed within the context of an art, design and media school. Students can channel their own artistic aspirations through Fine Arts courses, while also preparing to nurture the next generation of creative talent.
The Bachelor of Art Education is a four-year full-time degree. Honours is available to eligible students and is integrated into the fourth year.

Creative Degrees = Creative Careers

Art Education graduates are well equipped to join the workforce. As well as teaching, graduates are prepared for opportunities in the broader creative community. And most importantly, by undertaking an internship, students gain valuable work experience before they even graduate.

Student Choice

Throughout their study, students are able to fine-tune their skills and areas of expertise by undertaking electives in any area they wish.

Degree Structure

  • Stage 1: Students undertake foundation courses in both Art Education and Fine Arts.
  • Stage 2 and 3: Students are able to choose what Fine Arts area the wish to focus on. They also have a choice of electives.
  • Stage 4: Students participate in the Professional Experience Program for the whole first semester. They undertake a real teaching role in a NSW high school or another creative institution of their choosing. Eligible students may decide to complete Honours.

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. Prospective teachers must be able to communicate effectively with school students and staff members. Please see the Bachelor of Art Education entry in the UNSW Handbook for information on English Language proficiency requirements.
