Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Course Code: 2267

Administrator: School of Art, School of Design Studies, School of Media Arts, School of Art History and Art Education

Typical Duration: 1.5 years fulltime

Description

The MPhil is a research degree with a coursework component, designed to train students in the research techniques appropriate to their discipline(s). The degree is undertaken over three sessions full-time or six sessions part-time.

Courses

Students undertake three courses:

  • A formal literature review course (taught either one-to-one with a supervisor or within a class)
  • A research methods course
  • An elective course, relating to the area of the thesis

Concurrent with the coursework, students develop an independent thesis under the guidance of a supervisor. The thesis will not normally exceed 40,000 words and can incorporate practical or studio work by agreement. Where the submission embodies a substantial studio/production/exhibition component the length of the written component is proportionally reduced.

The MPhil provides a grounding for those wishing to undertake a PhD. Students in the program may apply to transfer to a PhD after one year (subject to approval). The MPhil is also recognized as an entry qualification for the PhD. Coursework Masters students transferring into an MPhil may be given credit for appropriate elective subjects and research methods courses.

Applications must be submitted with a research proposal (approx 1000-2000 words). (Applicants may consult the guidelines published on the website for Writing a PhD Proposal.)

The MPhil is available across the range of art, design and theoretical disciplines at COFA, subject to available supervision.
