Do you remember feeling lost or a little overwhelmed when you were in your first year?
Did you have lots of questions but wasn't sure who to ask?
Being a mentor is a very valuable experience. Essentially, as a mentor you will help new first year students coming to COFA. Crucial support, information and a sense of belonging does not come just from staff, but quite importantly, from fellow students.
Most students experience the initial settling-in period as stressful - new people, new
experiences, new expectations and demands from staff. University expects more of students and
expects them to be more self-reliant and self-motivated.
What's involved?
you will be assigned a group of mentees (of around 6 -12 people) who you will guide, support and provide assistance
it is program specific, therefore, if you are a current BDM student, you will be assigned new first year BDM students
you will be trained by the UNSW Counselling Services unit, (training goes for one day)
you are asked to attend and encourage your mentees to attend the Faculty organised events, which are social, free and a lot of fun!
we request that you meet with your mentees individually or as a group in your own time when possible
COFA, your School and the Counselling Services unit are also here to support you in your role as mentor.
Why join?
it's a lot of fun and you get the chance to meet new students as well as other peers
participating in this program is of enormous value not only to your fellow students and to COFA but also to you
it is an opportunity for you who have been through the transition period to give something back and help our newest students
you will gain skills and experience in leadership, interpersonal relationships and confidence in yourself
at the end of the program, the Dean will present a Certificate of Participation to you which outlines your achievements and be a valuable addition to any resume
