The Cité internationale des artes in Paris

The University has been nominating artists, performing artists, architects, musicians and art scholars to occupy the studio in the Cité Internationale des Arts which is situated on the right bank of the Seine, opposite the Isle St Louis, in an area known as 'Le Marais'. The Cité Internationale des Arts is a non-profit international art center, maintained by the French government to provide studio accommodation for young artists and scholars to develop their studio and research projects.

Studios in the Cité International des Arts are equipped with their own kitchenette and can accommodate up to two people and a child. No rent is payable, although residents are required to contribute a charge towards service and maintenance. Cité residents are also eligible for a free pass to most of the museums in Paris. The UNSW studio is usually allocated for periods of three months and is located in the Cité Internationale des Arts, 18 rue de l'Hotel de Ville, 75180 Paris Cedex 04, France.

Staff Eligibility
Open to UNSW academics in the visual and performing arts. Applications will only be accepted from permanent and contract UNSW staff whose lecturing or research duties would continue after the conclusion of the proposed residency.

Student Eligibility
Open to UNSW postgraduate research students in the visual and performing arts. Applications will only be accepted from UNSW post-graduate research students. Eligibility includes:

  • Students must still be engaged in the project applied for and remain enrolled at the time of their residency at the Cité.
  • The committee looks most favourably on proposals received in the early or mid periods of a student's candidature.
  • The Head of School or the Head of Post-Graduate Studies may be asked to provide to the committee a comment on a student's standing.
  • Students must nominate two individuals familiar with the project of the applicant and able to comment on this proposal. One referee must also comment on the relevance of the Paris project to the student's research studies.
Criteria
Applicants should include an account of the relevance of Paris for the proposed project. They must also indicate the relevance of the project to their research and/or teaching.

Applicants are asked to present an outline of a research/studio project (not more than two pages) involving areas such as dance, music, architecture, visual and performing arts practices or scholarship. They should indicate, as appropriate, what sites/museums it is proposed to research, what is to be studied there, and/or what work is to be undertaken, together with the relevance of the project to the applicant's research and/or teaching.

The criteria to be used by the Committee are:

  • The relevance of Paris to the project.
  • Quality of the research project.
  • The Committee's estimation of the capacity of the candidate to fulfill the research project at a high level.
  • The importance of art (visual or performance) within the research project.

Applicants will provide their own travel expenses, pay a small monthly service fee to the Citè Internationale des Arts for the studio, and any other costs for use of specialist Citè facilities such as the photographic studio.

A seminar will be held for proposed applicants (staff and students) mid-May. Enquiries to Elisabeth Burke.
