Voker Kuchelmeister is a practicing media artist, technologist and researcher in the field of immersive visualisation, narrative structures, omni-directional, multi-perspective and stereoscopic imaging and user interface design.
His research focus is in

Volker Kuchelmeister is a Lecturer at School of Media Arts and School of Design Studies at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales UNSW Sydney. He is associated with UNSW iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research as the Head of iCinema Studio and with the UNSW NIEA National Institute for Experimental Art.
In 1996, Kuchelmeister established the renowned and multi award winning Multimedia Studio at the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Institute for Visual Media, where he worked as Head until 2002. Numerous interactive media projects, museum displays, European Union research project and interactive art publication series (ZKM artintact, six volumes, ZKM Digital Arts Edition, five volumes) which have been produced over the years have earned the ZKM Multimedia Studio an outstanding international reputation.
In 2002 he continued in a full-time research position at the UNSW iCinema Centre as Head of Media Laboratory and transferred to the current partial teaching and research role at the College of Fine Arts in 2010. Kuchelmeister has collaborated as Chief Investigator in three Australian Research Council grants (a total of AUD 940,000) and as a Senior Research Associate, co-Inventor and joint Intellectual Property holder on a number of immersive and interactive applications and key iCinema technologies such as AVIE Advanced Visualization and Interaction Environment, iDome hemispherical projection environment and Spherecam 360º capture system. He has an active role in the commercialisation of iCinema’s research output (for instance Mines Rescue Pty Ltd. and Shenyang Research Institute of China Coal Technology & Engineering Groupcontract totalling over A$7million).
Kuchelmeister was appointed a Visiting Fellow at City University Hong Kong in 2011 (Feb.-June) and was invited to join ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe as a Visiting Research Fellow in 2009 (June – Oct.).

In the performing arts, Kuchelmeister collaborated with theatre director Robert Lepage and choreographer/dancer Saburo Teshigawara on large scale multichannel stereoscopic video installations (Fragmentation 2011, Double District 2008), with Liz Lecompte and the New York City based experimental theatre company The Wooster Group on a 360º immersive theatre installation (There is still time … brother, 2007), with choreographer William Forsythe on the award winning interactive publication and installation Improvisation Technologies, 1994-2011 and with Japanese traditional theatre performers Mansai and Mansaku Nomura on the award winning DVD publication series Mansaku & Mansai,That's Kyogen (2000).
