Allan Giddy

Director of The Environmental Research Initiative for Art

School of Art

Qualifications

MA BFA

Allan Giddy is a pioneer in, and one of Australia’s foremost proponents of, sustainable energy systems, electronic interconnectivity and interactivity embedded in the physical art object.

Currently Allan directs ERIA (The Environmental Research Initiative for Art) COFA UNSW, an organisation aimed at reinvigorating decaying public spaces through the installation of “active” artwork.

Giddy is currently working on the implementation of the research centre with the aim of progressing the use of sustainable energy systems right through from the fabrication of artworks in a solar/wind powered workshop to their eventual installation. ERIA's goal is to develop and explore the use of sustainable technology within public art as well as for other uses including public events, screenings, and portable energy systems for remote field work.

His work has been seen/installed at the Tate Modern, Heidelberg and Rotterdam town halls and numerous other venues from China, Ireland and Canada and Finland to Greece and Bulgaria.

In addition Allan also directed and co-curated energy-in-art exhibitions at UNSW’s Solar Research Centre (SOLARCH), Little Bay, Sydney in 1999 and 2002.
